HIKE BLOG

in the shade of north

Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.’

I’ll leave for Isle Royale later this week for eight days of backpacking, but first it’s a much needed vacation with Richard “up north” at our friend’s house on the shore of Gitche Gumee, “the big lake” (the largest lake in the world by surface area, Lake Superior) as well as in the enchanted interior forests filled with waterfalls, ancient dike swarms, and fungi.

Here are a just few photographic moments to share…

  1. Hello Alison – thanks for taking the Isle Royale trek snd I’m anxious to hear your impressions and experiences. This would have been the 23rd conservative hike of the Island’s length. I usually go in May or September. For me, the boat passage is a big part of the trip there and back again from Grand Portage. Enjoy the flight. Seeing the Island(s) and their rocky bones rising out of Lake Superior is a transformative experience each time I flight from Thunder Bay. You’ll remember the views from the plane when your feet are on the ground feeling those basalt bones.

    1. wow! this is my very first trip and I can hardly wait to have my feet in such a magical place. I will take lots of pictures of those bones from the air! 🐥👣🎒

  2. Be careful Alison, It is getting close to moose rutting season. We have had an experienced hiker friend
“treed” by a bull moose for several hours on Isle Royale. But there might be blueberries…….and white throated sparrow songs.

    1. whoa! that must have been awful. I heard they’re aggressive at the moment and if they charge, to run and place myself behind trees – or climb one! What I’m reading says never stand your ground and actually not make loud noises.
Loads of raspberries and thimbleberries just now on the mainland!
